Here’s our new home (for now)!

admin | August 26, 2010 8:49 pm

Finally, a new location for the Co-op’s premises – map follows at the end of this post.

Our new, temporary location is in the car park behind The Conservation Council demountable on Childers St. The building will be rotated 180 degrees so that The Co-op will be at the northern end and Canberra Dance Theater will be at the southern end. This is to allow for truck access to our ramp and loading areas for deliveries. Since we will be in a car park, there will obviously be parking available but I currently do not know whether there will be any allocated, free parking or not.

On Monday, September 13, the crew from Baulderstone will start to dismantle this building. Since it needs to be vacant by that date, we will start to empty it as soon as we have containers delivered to the car park behind this building. I should have a date for the delivery next week. Please remember that any member assistance is welcomed and anyone who notifies me of this will be informed as soon as I am able to draw up a roster with exact dates.

Baulderstone has said we can take possession of the re-located premises on approximately September 24, since this is a Friday, we may use that following weekend to re-stock and open for business as usual on Tuesday, September 28. I will confirm this later.

Thank you for your patience and continued custom during this pre-move period. Inevitably we have had to run down our stock in preparation for moving. But now that we have an exact date, I have gotten in a good supply of fresh fruit and vegetables for you to stock up on. Also we are having a special on fresh noodles. 450gm packs of fresh Absolute Organic Soba, Hokkien and Udon noodles are $2.85 per pack before any member’s discounts. I know what my family is having for dinner. :)

Capital Cravings for unpackaged organics!

Jess from local food blog Capital Cravings has done a great review of the Co-op – check out the post here

Still no definite news on our new home, but lots of fresh food!

Barbara | 4:34 pm

I was hoping that I would have definite news about when we will be moving by today.{ I know, you can hear the “but” already.} But still no official date. I apologise for any inconvenience this is causing due to low or depleted stocks. One thing I can say is that we have been asked to empty this building and it will be separated into 15 sections. So I’m sure you will appreciate my dilemma. “To stock or not to stock?” Without a doubt, we will re-stock fully once we have re-located.

Enjoy your week.

Co-op relocation news and fresh food delivery

admin | August 19, 2010 6:12 pm

Greetings Shoppers,

Just as I sat down to write this, Aaron, the fellow from Baulderstone in charge of our relocation arrived. He explained the process but we are still uncertain of the date. Early September seems likely though not certain yet. We will be needing help in the pack down, set up and related jobs. Any member who is able to assist will be given 1 butterfly stamp per hour worked so this will be a good opportunity to bring your hours up to date and even into the future if you are keen and helpful. As soon as I know the date, I will put together a roster for helpers. Thanking you in advance for volunteering.

Enjoy your week.

Are you the new Co-op secretary?

Barbara | August 12, 2010 9:07 pm
The Management Committee is looking for a new secretary.  If anyone would like to take on this job, we would be grateful and you would have the opportunity to make a difference with a like-minded group of members.
Please think about it and let Babs at the Co-op know if you are interested or have questions.   More information about the position.

Otherwise we are still waiting to hear from ANUExchange as to where and when we will be moving but don’t worry, you will be the first to know!

The Co-op is moving to temporary premises

admin | July 28, 2010 7:23 pm

We have been in meetings with ANUExchange regarding both our interim accommodation and the design and layout of our brand new shop in the 4th UniLodge. You will be happy to know that our interim accommodation will be on the ANU campus, and we should be able to let you know exactly where  in about a week.  Otherwise the planning is moving ahead and we are truly fortunate to be included in the new building.

We are now carrying Tasmanian Seaweed and beautiful, palm oil free soap. If you haven’t tried these products yet, you might like to in the near future. Also, don’t forget, all the Naturally Clean products are made right here in the ACT and they are great cleaning products.

Stocktake today!

Barbara | June 28, 2010 1:19 pm

I hope you are well and not too frozen this morning. We have been busily doing stock-take today and we will be taking delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables tomorrow.

Also the dairy/milk fridge has just been repaired and we will get a delivery of milk on Tuesday as well. There is quite a good supply of fruit & vegetables in the store for tomorrow until the new order arrives.

Raw/living food workshop this weekend at the Co-op

zoe | June 9, 2010 1:20 pm

Some information from Alison, who you might recognise as a Co-op coordinator:

The next raw workshop is on Saturday June the 12th,. The first one sold out and this one has a few places left, I have attached a flyer with all the info on it. Please pass this on to any interested friends and family ect you may have as well.

It will cover the basics to show you just how easy it is to include living food in your daily life :)

Here is a testimonial with permission form a lovely girl who did the last workshop;

“Hi Alison,

Lots of gratitude for Joy and yourself for organising the workshop. No matter how much you read about Raw and think you can do it, its no where near the same as seeing it being done in front of you. I thought the workshop was very informative and practical, it showed us how quick and easy it can be to whip up some raw treats. And because of that, I went out the very next day and bought the exact same cafe series blender and started making green smoothies, the raw cheese and soups. Have been doing it every day since, and am already up and running with my raw lifestyle transformation! So thanks guys!”

Also below is a little blurb about raw food,

Raw Food Diet?

A raw food diet or a living food diet as it is often refereed too, includes foods that are unprocessed and uncooked, such as plant foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, dried fruit, sprouted legumes, nuts, and seaweed. As we know these foods can assist in providing us with good health.

When we don’t heat food above 116 degrees F it is believed to keep the enzymes in food intact, that can greatly assist in the digestion and absorption of food. Not cooking a food also helps retain the nutritional value and “life force” of food. Also by cooking foods it is possible to destroy many of the vitamins and minerals essential for good health.

The amount of raw food you eat will depend on an individual’s preference, however the more the better. One easy way to include more green leafy vegetables in your diet is to incorporate a green smoothie into your daily food intake, this is a combination of leafy green vegetable, and fruit, blended with water. An easy way to do this is to make a green smoothie in the mornings, where you use fruit and any green you like such as baby spinach and blend this with some water, The more fruit of course the sweeter the smoothie will be.

Some benefits of a Raw Food Diet are numerous, just a few are listed below and include;

* Increased energy
* Improved skin appearance
* Better digestion
* Weight loss
* Reduced risk of heart disease

I could go on….

WORKSHOP 12 June

New Co-ordinators needed

admin | June 3, 2010 12:34 pm

Hello Food Co-op Shop Members

From time to time the team of Co-op Cordinators loses some its members due to people leaving town, work pressures or personal/family matters.

Currently several people have left and we would like to have more people join us!

The basic time requirements are the ability to staff shifts of just over three hours on a regular(freqency to be arranged) basis. Training is provided.

In return there are considerable discounts and other benefits. Of course there is also the chance to meet a host of interesting people and be part of the co-ordinator team.

If there is anyone who is interested please contact Assistant Manager Barbara Schreiner at the anu@foodco-op.com email address.
